Old family books

This is a lot of 13 books for the literature collector. They have been gathered over the years by my family, and some are in rather poor condition, as might be expected of books of this vintage.

Titles include:

Kipling: Selected Poems - no date, appears to be about 1905, leather embossed cover, gilt lettering and edges. Thomas Y Crowell Co, NY. Binding is missing spine and back cover is loose. Pages are brittle.

Prince of Darkness, a novel, by F. Warden. Not dated. Lupton publishing, NY. Avon Edition. Appears to be 1900-1910. Cloth binding, spine worn/missing, a bit musty.

A Bunch of Cherries, by Mrs. L. T. Meade. Dated 1915. Cloth binding, color plate on cover, binding somewhat loose, pages and cover discolored. Grosset & Dunlap, NY.

The Story of the Wedding Ring, a novel, by Charlotte M Breame. Not dated, c. 1890-1900. Hurst and Co, NY. Arlington Edition. Red cloth binding, gilt title on spine, pages brittle/browning.

Hyde Park, its history and romance, by Mrs. Alec-Tweedie. 1930. Besant & Co, London. Red cloth binding, good condition.

The Trembling of a Leaf, a collection of short stories, by W. Somerset, Maugham, c. 1939. Doubleday, Doran, and Co, NY. Good condition. Illustrated spine.

Christmas Books, by Charles Dickens (books 1 and 2). Belonged to my grandfather. Dated 1912. Red cloth binding, somewhat water damaged.

As a Man Thinketh, a book of philosophy and moral guidance, by James Allen. G.P. Putman & sons, NY. Dated 1924. Good condition, gilt decorations on cover and spine. Originally belonged to James Henry Breasted, a prominant archeologist and Egpytologist at the University of Chicago. Given to my great grandmother in 1936. Here is some information on the first owner of the book.

Only an Irish Boy, by Horatio Alger. Not dated, c. 1900-1910. M. A. Donohue & Co, Chicago. Colored cloth cover and spine, a bit dog-eared and cloth binding coming loose. Pages brittle and browning.

Jack's Ward, by Horatio Alger. Missing first 33 pages. No date, probably 1900-1910. Cloth binding, color plate on cover, binding loose, pages discolored and cover worn.

The Swiss Family Robinson, by Johann David Wyss. Hurst & Co, NY, Arlington Edition. Cloth cover and spine. Not dated, pages brittle/browning, cover loose, Seventh Edition.

Sheldon's Modren School Third Reader. Sheldon & Co, NY and Chicago. Appears to be Victorian, with detailed copperplate engravings and maroon cloth cover. A few crayon drawings inside cover and pencil marks inside, but in quite nice condition. Found in an old one-room schoolhouse my parents converted to housing in Baraboo, WI.
